Episode #8 - Halloween - The Pirate Signal & PANAL

Sorry for the late update on this episode, we're undergoing some exciting changes over here at Brass Tree International, and the posterous just kind of got brushed aside. Won't happen again, I promise. Please enjoy our Halloween episode!

Sometimes there's a love/hate relationship with Halloween. It's a very fun holiday, don't get me wrong. Strong contender for funnest holiday. Yet there's also the sudden realization that it's almost winter and the end of the year. It's easy to get bewildered at the passing of time even though it's just going to keep rolling at the same pace (well, that's depending on where you stand on the whole relativity issue but we really don't have time to get into that right now).

Anyhow, please enjoy a very Halloween Brass Tree Session with PANAL and The Pirate Signal. These guys know how to put on a show.

    Episode 7 - Part 1 - Intro & Amazing Twin

    August 27, 2011

There was so much heat. The sun was brutal. The spirits were high. I've written before about how hot it gets during these sessions right? So hot. Maybe it strengthens the bond the audience and performer. Both are willing to suffer for the other. Maybe that's ridiculous. I dunno. Maybe everyone was just trying to hold on to that summer feeling in the last week of August. Whatever the reason, this show felt even more like a community bonding session.

Amazing Twin put in a very spirited performance of a new song, ManCub brought the epic dance party, and Accordion Crimes slowly built us up just so that they could destroy us like only they know how.

The intro features Boba Fett & The Americans.

    The UMS Part 2

This happened two months ago. Sorry for the delay, but it's coming out now for two reasons.

Firsties- These episodes take longer to produce as we get better at making them and this is the best one yet. Not to play favorites or anything.

Secondsies- We're fighting the end of summer by sheer force of will. Keeping the flame alive and whatnot. We're not ready to put on sweaters yet.

This is the second half of our show during the UMS.

It features "Wee Mouse" by Vitamins, "Latin Jammer" by Bad Weather California, and "G.S" by Overcasters.

    Love ya DNVR

    The UMS Part 1

The UMS might be our favorite time of the year*. No joke. It combines two things that are great. Summer and jams. Even better, it happens about a block away from our house. During UMS we can walk out our door, eat some sweet action ice cream, see all of our favorite locals, find out about some rad touring bands and then pass out on our couch from an overdose of fun.

This year it was even better because we have a show to run. What better way to participate in the neighborhood-wide musical lovefest than to open up our house and ask some great bands to play? There is no better way. We checked. We really hope we can do it again next year.

Here is part 1 of a two-part episode about our UMS day party.

Brass Tree Sessions Episode #5: The Heat of Summer

One thing about shooting these during the day is that it can get very, very hot. Though no one seems to mind that much when the music is playing and our backyard features several feet of prime well-shaded real estate, everyone was definitely feeling the heat.

It's a good thing the lineup this month featured three bands that represent everything good about Summer. Force Publique sound like the kind of trouble you can get into on summer nights when you don't need to wear much clothing. School Knights evokes what getting out of school for three months feels like. Fingers of the Sun are the perfect soundtrack for having a picnic, an afternoon bike ride, or an acid trip.

So Jens Lekman came to our house a few weeks ago. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. I think everyone else there felt the same way. Here are a few of the songs he played for us.

Part 1-  A Sweet Summer's Night on Hammer Hill

Jens was supposed to come to Denver two years ago to play the Gothic Theatre but his tour bus was caught in a snowstorm in Wyoming. A few weeks ago, someone in Denver booked him for a wedding. He sent out feelers looking for a house to play the night before and through a few texts our friends at the Illiterate Gallery connected us Jens and now our house became the venue for Jens Lekman's Denver debut.
This show was magical and the perfect kickoff for the Summer. "A Sweet Summer's Night on Hammer Hill" might as well have been about this night.

I've never heard this room so quiet. This was a secret show, but we still had more people then we could really even hold in this tiny room and every single one of them were in awed silence, hanging on Jens' every word.

Part 3- The Opposite of Hallelujah

Jens Lekman starts this one off with a story about why he loves to play house shows. I couldn't agree more with him. The kind of intimacy you experience when you're packed into a tiny room with friends and strangers, mere feet (sometimes inches) from the performer that just can't be replicated on any kind of stage no matter how small. This song is one of my favorite of Lekman's and I was ecstatic that I got to see him play it live in my dining room.

    Episode 4: A New Hope

Do you believe in vibes? Not in like a new age way but more the mood of a room. The timbre of the crowd, if I can abuse my poetic license. It's pretty clear that this show was the spring to episode 3's harsh winter. God, this is getting a bit too LiveJournal for my taste.

Suffice to say, the birds were chirping and the bees were updating their OKCupid profiles. Flowers blooming, allergies, etc. Everyone was relaxed and in high spirits. The perfect day for a cookout with some friends. It's nice.

We made it! Winter is over!

Cougar Pants are wonderful. Hindershot is a hulking behemoth of post-post rock and or roll. It is imposible for me to be unbiased about Safe Boating is No Accident, so I will say this: we made the universe ovulate.

    Please enjoy Episode 4!

PS- We will be taking next month off to finish an official video for Night of Joy which we will also post here. We will be posting a lot of bonus material throughout the coming weeks so keep a look out.

I've always really liked these guys. I played a show with them years back at the Lion's Lair. It was totally Lion's Lair. We at least have a slightly more pleasant bathroom than the Lion's Lair. the DBCs played a great set this night, even though some douche heckled them and a fight broke out. Weird, I never thought of their music as something I would set a fight scene to but I guess it kind of works. Like in a irony via cognitive dissonance sort of way. So not at all really. Great song by one of Denver's best bands. Dudes kill it over and over.

Round 3. FIGHT. Fighting is stupid. Especially when you're drunk. BTW if you argue drunk you are automatically wrong. It's a fact. Oof. I hope that didn't get too preachy. I'm just saying. Episode three was an experience. More people, bigger production, two more drumsets. We started of hazy with Bury My Bones, got pepped up with the Don'ts and Be Carefuls, and then Night of Joy smashed the pitch black infinity mirror to pieces as we tried to glimpse our own reflection. Does the void make me look puffy? Anyways this one got dark, but the better kind of dark. The interesting kind of dark. Not sad dark. Is there a band called Sad Dark? There shouldn't be. Enjoy!.

Holy crap this one was crazy. Way more people this time around, our floor was pretty well destroyed by about 10 PM. Moshing happened, Crowdsurfing happened, vases smashed, hearts broken. Well maybe no hearts were broken.. it just sort of rolled off my mind's tongue. But it's a possibility. There were certainly enough people there and I'm pretty sure a few of them made out on our couch. By the way: gross. That's gross. Those couches are gross. They are dog beds.

Digressions aside, enjoy Nipples & Dimes and Thee Goochi Boiz and Hot White! They put on an incredible show. Legendary, even. I real felt like this night was pretty special. I hope you think so too.
